Protect Head Start: Your Voice Can Help Protect High-Quality Services for Children and Families
Head Start has helped generations of children build a strong foundation for lifelong learning while connecting families to essential support services. Today, proposed federal changes could affect many of the standards that help ensure children and families receive the comprehensive, high-quality services Head Start is known for.
At MAAC, we support efforts that reduce unnecessary administrative burden. At the same time, we believe it is important to preserve the standards that help protect quality, safety, accountability, and access for children and families. Many of the proposed changes would remove federal minimum standards that currently help ensure consistency and quality across Head Start programs.
Why Head Start Matters
Head Start is much more than early childhood education. Families rely on the program for coordinated services that support children’s learning, health, nutrition, development, safety, and family engagement. These services work together to help children arrive at school ready to learn while giving families the tools and support they need to succeed.
The standards currently in place help ensure that children and families across the country receive a consistent level of support. Proposed changes could affect areas such as developmental screenings, classroom staffing standards, language access support, family engagement practices, workforce requirements, and program accountability.
