Weatherization Services

MAAC’s Weatherization Services helps low-income households increase the energy efficiency of their homes, thereby reducing utility expenses, boosting comfort and increasing safety.

The program, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy since 1978, offers home improvement measures at no cost to income-eligible families throughout San Diego County. These services are intended to reduce energy consumption through the replacement of inefficient appliances, window sealing and/or replacement, weather-stripping of doors, installation of low-flow shower heads, and replacement of insulation. Installation of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors may also be provided if necessary.

Interested households are screened for eligibility based on income and size of household; priority may be given to households that are particularly vulnerable such as the elderly, persons with disabilities or families with children. Once eligibility is confirmed, a MAAC Energy Auditor will assess the residence for energy conservation needs. A typical inspection may include testing the home for air leakage and a combustion appliance evaluation to determine the safety and efficiency of older appliances. During the inspection, our staff determine which services are most cost effective and discuss a work plan with the residents. Our certified work crew will complete the prescribed measures at no cost, and provide residents with energy-conserving suggestions. Upon completion of the work, a certified Quality Assurance Inspector will closely review all repairs and installations to ensure the highest quality of work performed. Households save an average of $350 annually after completion of MAAC’s Weatherization Program improvements.

Households may also quality for MAAC’s Energy Assistance Program, which subsidizes one month’s energy expenses per year. Households may also benefit from San Diego Gas & Electric’s CARE Program for a discount on monthly bills, visit SDG&E’s website for more information.
