Opinion: Caring for 1,450 unaccompanied minors every day in San Diego was daunting but we didn’t hesitate

MAAC played a pivotal role in the emergency intake shelter for unaccompanied migrant children at the San Diego Convention Center. Alongside other local service organizations, MAAC leveraged its expertise in childcare and trauma-informed services to help develop and operate the shelter’s social services. This collaborative effort ensured that the children’s physical, emotional, and educational needs were met, resulting in the successful reunification of over 2,400 minors with their families and placement of an additional 800 with supportive sponsors.
